Disney Ear Review: “Rule the Galaxy” with Darth Vader Ears

Capture the Sith’s sinister style with these embossed and embroidered Darth Vader ears

With Halloween on the horizon, we thought we’d break out a pair of villainous ears inspired by the original Star Wars baddie, Darth Vader. These ears were designed by Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano in the Clone Wars series) for Her Universe. Fans of the blog will recognize those names: we are huge fans of Her Universe and have several of their ears and outfits!

So when ShopDisney released this pair on Star Wars Day–May the Fourth–2021, I just had to snag a pair!

Update: these ears are currently sold out on ShopDisney, but they have been restocked several times so keep checking back! There are also reasonably-priced pairs on websites like eBay and Mercari.

Here’s what these ears look like in real life:

What We Loved

Unique Theme/Style:

These ears are easier to appreciate up-close than from a distance. The little Darth Vader helmet figurine on the bow and the embossed Imperial insignia on the ears themselves are quite subtle. But the text on the back is quite readable, and I love how the design combines the different fabrics of Darth Vader’s costume.

Ear Shape/Size:

As I expect from official Disney ears, these ears are uniform in shape and size. My pair was a bit squished in my bag during a day at Magic Kingdom, but it was fairly easy to re-shape them.

I love the combination of the pleather bow and vinyl ears. All of the material is high-quality and unlikely to be damaged by water or humidity.

This is my favorite part of these ears! I love the tiny, detailed helmet and the sheen on the black bow.

These ears are professionally sewn and the visible stitching is all uniform and integrated into the design of the ears.

These ears stayed put while running around Disney World and chasing down the Jedi younglings in my group (don’t worry, they all survived)!

Turnaround Time:

These ears arrived in 15 days.

Pricing: $$

These ears were under $34 (not including shipping)

Who would love these?

Fans of Star Wars can all unite in their love for Anakin Skywalker’s long redemption arc. While he does want to “rule the galaxy,” I think most FashionEarstas have been tempted by that career path at least once! Fans of the Clone Wars animated series will get even more out of these ears, since they were designed by one of the actors!

What Needs Work

This headband is fabric-lined but not slippery.

The headband itself is does pinch a bit when worn for long periods of time.

Needs Improvement

As is standard for ShopDisney ears, these arrived in an un-padded mailing envelope. Fortunately the ears are pretty durable, but this is definitely a place where the shop can improve.

Where should future FashionEarstas be seen in these ears?

Wear these to meet your imperial underlings on Rise of the Resistance at Disney World or Disneyland! It’s always good to drop in unannounced and check on the morale of the Stormtroopers and interrogation specialists manning your battleships, right?

Overall Score: (4.8/5)

These Darth Vader ears are practically perfect! Their only issues are long-standing complaints we’ve had about official Disney ears–they pinch and they’re shipped without much care. Hopefully these things will improve eventually?

I hope that you found this review helpful! I’d love to hear what you think of all of our ears! Is there a character we should find a pair of ears for next? Make sure you check us out on Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram; chances are you will see our ears in action!
